Inequity means injustice or unfairness, while inequality doesn’t necessarily imply an injustice, simply an imbalance. Oftentimes, inequities can lead to or cause inequalities, be they in income, home ownership, graduation rates, etc., but the two are different things. The word inequality means a mathematical expression in which the sides are not equal to each other. Basically, an inequality compares any two values and shows that one value is less than, greater than, or equal to the value on the other side of the equation. Basically, there are five inequality symbols used to represent equations of inequality.

Solving inequalities mc-TY-inequalities-2009-1 Inequalities are mathematical expressions involving the symbols >, <, ≥ and ≤. To ‘solve’ an inequality means to find a range, or ranges, of values that an unknown x can take and still satisfy the inequality. In this unit inequalities are solved by using algebra and by using graphs.

Recall that for a statement separated by “and” to be true BOTH statements must be true. If it is separated by “or,” at least one statement must be true. In short: An "or" statement really needs a proper symbol written out for it, unlike a chained inequality which is defined to imply the "and" connector. The following is called a compound inequality: x > 1 and x ≤ 5.

A compound inequality contains at least two inequalities that are separated by either "and" or "or". The graph of a compound inequality with an "and" represents the intersection of the graph of the inequalities. A number is a solution to the compound inequality if the number is a solution to both inequalities. It can either be written as x > -1 and About Press Copyright Contact us Creators Advertise Developers Terms Privacy Policy & Safety How YouTube works Test new features Press Copyright Contact us Creators 2021-04-14 · The set of all values which satisfy either inequality is the set of all points which satisfy one or the other or both--this includes the overlap.

Why? Because the variable is contained within one interval. In the example above, x was both "more than –3" and also "less than +3". The x is in the interval that satisfied both inequalities at the same time. So "and" is the correct conjuction. A compound inequality is a sentence with two inequality statements joined either by the word “or” or by the word “and.”. “And” indicates that both statements of the compound sentence are true at the same time. It is the overlap or intersection of the solution sets for the individual statements.
